How to add a watermark to a PDF in 4 steps
FreePDFLab runs entirely in your browser, so the steps below happen on your device without anything being uploaded to a server.
Upload the PDF
Drop your PDF onto the upload area. FreePDFLab loads it locally so the watermark is added on your device without uploading the file anywhere.
Type the watermark text
Enter the text you want stamped on every page — "CONFIDENTIAL", "DRAFT", your company name, or a project code. Short phrases work best at typical sizes.
Pick size, opacity, and angle
Tune the font size (12–120 pt), opacity (light / medium / strong), and angle (diagonal, horizontal, reverse diagonal). The defaults match the classic "DRAFT" stamp look.
Apply and download
Click "Process". FreePDFLab stamps every page with your watermark and offers a preview before you download the watermarked PDF.
Why add a watermark to a PDF with FreePDFLab
Stamp every page in one click
Type once, watermark applies to every page. Useful for marking shared drafts, confidential reports, or internal versions of a document.
Customisable opacity and angle
Subtle text overlay or assertive cover-the-page diagonal — both are a couple of clicks away. The opacity stays low enough to leave the underlying content readable.
No server upload
Watermarks happen locally, so even sensitive PDFs (legal drafts, NDAs, payroll) can be stamped without exposure. The watermarked file is generated on your device.
Free with no watermark from us
You get to keep the watermark you choose — FreePDFLab does not add a separate "FreePDFLab" stamp like many free tools do.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add my company logo as a watermark?
The current watermark tool stamps text only. Image watermarks are on the roadmap. For now, generating a PNG of your logo and using image-aware tools is the workaround.
Will the watermark cover up the text in my PDF?
It depends on opacity. The "Light" preset keeps the underlying content easily readable; "Strong" makes the watermark the dominant element on the page. Most users pick "Medium".
Does the watermark get added to every page?
Yes. Watermarking applies to every page of the PDF in one pass. Per-page watermarking is not yet supported — every page gets the same stamp.
Is the watermark searchable text in the output PDF?
Yes. The watermark is real PDF text drawn with the Helvetica-Bold standard font, so it is selectable, searchable, and copyable. If you need it to be a non-extractable image, flatten the PDF after watermarking.
Can someone remove the watermark from the downloaded PDF?
In theory, a skilled user with the right tools can edit any PDF. Flattening the PDF after watermarking (using the Flatten tool) makes removal much harder for casual editors.
Is the watermarking process secure?
Yes. The PDF never leaves your device — the watermark is applied locally and the output is generated in-browser. There is no server step that could leak the document.
