How to add page numbers to a PDF in 4 steps

FreePDFLab runs entirely in your browser, so the steps below happen on your device without anything being uploaded to a server.

  1. Upload your PDF

Drop your PDF onto the upload area. FreePDFLab loads it locally and the page-number tool processes it without uploading anything to a server.

  2. Choose a number format

Pick from "Page 1", just "1", or "1 / total". The third option is handy for printed booklets where readers want to know how many pages remain.

  3. Pick a position and starting number

Decide whether numbers go bottom-center, bottom-right, bottom-left, or top-center, and what number to start counting from (useful if your PDF is a chapter starting at page 47).

  4. Apply and download

Click "Process" to stamp the numbers, preview the result inline, and download the numbered PDF.

Why add page numbers to a PDF with FreePDFLab

Three useful number formats

Plain "1", descriptive "Page 1", or contextual "1 / 12". Pick the one that matches the document — academic papers, reports, and printed booklets each prefer a different style.

Choose where the numbers go

Bottom center is classic, bottom right matches most printed books, bottom left is common in legal documents, and top center is the convention for some technical reports.

Pick the starting number

If your PDF is the middle chapter of a longer document, start the count at the right offset so the numbers line up with the rest of the binder.

Browser-private

No upload, no server step. The numbering happens locally and the resulting PDF is generated on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Can I number only some pages and skip a cover or title page?

Not yet. The current tool numbers every page using the same format. A common workaround is to use the "Add Blank Pages" tool first to insert an unnumbered cover, then number from page 2.

Will the page number overlap with the existing text or images?

The default font size and margin keep numbers in a typical footer area outside the main content. If your PDF already has tight margins, lower the font size (try 8 pt) so the number does not collide with content.

Can I change the font of the page number?

The page-number tool uses Helvetica at the size you choose (default 10 pt). Custom font support is on the roadmap.

Does the page number become part of the PDF or is it a watermark?

It is drawn directly into each page as real PDF text. The numbers are selectable and searchable, just like any other text in the document.

Can I number a 500-page PDF in one go?

Yes. The numbering loop runs in your browser and a 500-page PDF typically finishes in a few seconds. There is no server-side limit because nothing leaves your device.

Is this tool free for commercial documents?

Yes. There is no usage restriction and no watermark added to the output. You can use the numbered PDFs for any purpose, including commercial publication.
