How to flatten a PDF in 4 steps

FreePDFLab runs entirely in your browser, so the steps below happen on your device without anything being uploaded to a server.

  1. Upload your PDF

Drop the file onto the upload area or click to browse. The flatten runs locally — your PDF never leaves your device.

  2. Run the flatten

Click "Process". FreePDFLab walks through the form fields, annotations, and overlays in the PDF and merges them into the underlying page content.

  3. Preview the result

Inline preview shows what the flattened PDF looks like. Form fields appear as plain text/graphics — they can no longer be edited as fields.

  4. Download the flattened PDF

Download the result. The flattened version is what most recipients will see when they fill in or sign a form — minus the editable interaction.

Why flatten a PDF with FreePDFLab

Lock in filled-out forms

After completing a PDF form, flatten it so the values become permanent. Recipients cannot accidentally (or deliberately) change them.

Keep watermarks from being removed

Watermarks, signatures, and annotations stay as floating layers in a normal PDF. Flattening bakes them into the page so they are much harder to remove.

Reliable printing

Some printers handle form fields and annotations inconsistently. A flattened PDF prints predictably because there are no overlay objects left.

Browser-private

Flatten runs locally. Sensitive completed forms — applications, tax returns, NDAs — stay on your device through the whole process.

Frequently asked questions

What does "flattening" actually do to my PDF?

It merges form fields, annotations, and other interactive overlays into the underlying page content. The visual result is identical, but the editable layers are gone — what you see is what you get.

Can I edit form fields after flattening?

No. Flattening makes the field values permanent. If you need to keep editing, save the original PDF before flattening — flattening is not reversible.

Does flattening reduce the file size?

Often yes, because the form field objects, JavaScript actions, and annotation metadata are removed. The size of pages with embedded images stays roughly the same.

Will flattening preserve my signature?

Yes. Visual signature stamps are merged into the page content. Digital signatures (cryptographic ones embedded in the PDF) are stripped because flattening invalidates them.

Is my PDF uploaded when I flatten it?

No. The flatten runs in your browser using pdf-lib. The PDF stays on your device throughout.

Can I undo a flatten?

No. Once form fields and annotations are merged into the page, they cannot be separated again. Keep a copy of the original PDF if you might need to edit it later.
