How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Updated June 14, 2026 · 4 min read
Number PDF pages with custom position and format, then preview the result before downloading.
Why page numbers help
Page numbers make PDF documents easier to review, print, cite, and share. They are especially useful for reports, study notes, legal packets, and long scanned documents.
Best placement for PDF page numbers
Bottom center works well for most documents. Bottom right is common for formal reports. Top center can be useful if the bottom of the page already contains footnotes or page content.
- Use a simple format like Page 1 for general documents.
- Use 1 / total when readers need to know document length.
- Start from a custom number if your PDF is part of a larger packet.
Preview before download
With FreePDFLab, numbering is applied in the browser and a preview is shown before you download. This helps catch placement problems before saving the final PDF.
